Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today said in case of a water crisis, he has asked the Jal Board to cut supply to all VIPs including him and all ministers, and not just the people of Delhi.
The supply to the Prime Minister and President, will however, be unaffected.
"In case of water shortage, I have asked the Delhi Jal Board to cut supply not only of the poor, but of the VIPs as well - the ministers of Central and state government," Mr Kejriwal said at the Delhi assembly today. "Barring the Prime Minister, President, hospitals and 24-hour services, cut supply for everyone, including me."
Water shortage, he said, should not be faced only by the people of Delhi but by the VIPs as well. He also blamed Haryana for not cooperating with Delhi on over water sharing.
The Aam Aadmi Party's commitment to provide free water and cheap electricity was seen as one of the driving forces of its phenomenal performance in the Delhi election - it won more than 95% of the seats in the Delhi assembly.
Eleven days after taking over, the government had delivered on its promise. It said 20,000 litres of free water will be given to every household each month, and families that use less than 400 units of power per month will get a 50% discount on their bills.
But in the next fiscal year, the subsidy for electricity is likely to cost the government about Rs. 1,400 crore. The discount on water will add up to about Rs. 250 crore.
