Delhi: Eight held at airport for smuggling in gold worth Rs 2.04 crore

New Delhi: Eight passengers have been arrested at the international airport in New Delhi for allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth over Rs 2 crore into the country.

The accused were intercepted by customs officials following their arrival from Riyadh. While seven of the accused had landed in New Delhi yesterday, the eighth passenger arrived today.

During a personal search, they were found to be hiding a cumulative 8.1kg of gold in their clothes. The value of the seized gold is estimated to be Rs 2.04 crore, a customs official said.

The accused hail from Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, he added.

A man was arrested at the international airport on Tuesday for trying to smuggle in gold bars valued at about Rs 38 lakh.

The passenger had arrived in New Delhi from Bangkok.

Earlier this week, three passengers were arrested by customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle in gold worth about Rs 74 lakh.
