Long before the official results of the Delhi election, images from the homes and offices of the three main contestants were read by many as telling.
At the Aam Aadmi Party headquarters in west Delhi, a sizeable crowd of supporters gathered, party flags, caps and brooms - the party's poll symbol - in place. They sat around a makeshift stage where a giant TV screen was put up. White and green balloons were put up and large banners described party chief Arvind Kejriwal as "Janta ka CM."
Journalists reporting from the spot shouted over the chanting of "Inquilab Zindabad" and patriotic songs. At every lead, announced like ball by ball cricket commentary, cheers went up. As the trends indicated victory, slogans of "Paanch Saal Kejriwal" erupted.
Wihin an hour of counting, AAP had taken a lead in more than twice as many seats as its main rival, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP.
The BJP had rejected adverse predictions by surveys and last night, reportedly ordered sweets.
The party's office this morning was quiet compared to the festivities in AAP.
An image of a worker sweeping the BJP office with a broom early this morning was widely circulated and the symbolism was not lost on anyone.
Kiran Bedi, the BJP's presumptive chief minister, woke up to a crowd of media crew surrounding her home in south Delhi. She tweeted the images.
As the results indicated a setback for her party, she put on a brave face. "I am a tennis player, this is like a match. One person will lose and one person will win," she said, speaking to reporters from her balcony.
The scene outside the home of Ajay Maken, the Congress' chief ministerial candidate, presented a sharp contrast. There were some media crew and hardly any supporters. The party office was completely bereft of any buzz.
