New Delhi: Winter's first fog threw the flight schedule from and to the national capital in disarray this morning. With visibility improving, flights have resumed at the airport though delays will continue because of the backlog. (See pics)
Airport officials said over 40 flights were affected because of the dense fog since late last night. Runway 29, which remained closed for most part of the morning, has been opened. (Send your pictures)
At Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport, irate passengers complained that there was little information available about flight delays. Jet Airways flight 821 to Chennai which was to take off at 6.50 am, was pushed back; it circled the runway on the ground and then was asked to return to bay.
Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, reportedly flying to Chennai, was among the hapless travellers at the airport. At Terminal 1, boards announced delays for all flights but authorities could not say by when they would take off.
Several trains from the capital have also been cancelled or delayed, railway authorities said.
The fog this morning was considerably thicker at the airport than in the central parts of the capital.
Met officials said the situation could get worse during the week with skies clearing and a fall in temperature.
Dense fog has also been reported in cities like Jammu and Amritsar.
