With the arrest of two persons and recovery of 11 stolen cars on their instance, Delhi Police today claimed to have busted a gang of auto-lifters active Northern India.
Hashim (24) and Chander Shekhar (45), both residents of Aligarh district, were arrested by the staff of Hazrat Nizamuddin police station of South-East district.
On April 17, information was received that a person would come to Nizamuddin area to sell a stolen car. During checking, police stopped a white Maruti van and asked the driver to produce the vehicle's documents.
On sustained interrogation, Hashim disclosed that the car had been stolen by Dinesh and Pappu Pehelwan and was given to him for disposal, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) K Karunakaran.
"He also told us that Dinesh and Pappu Pehelwan have handed him several other stolen vehicles in past and with the help of Shekhar has sold them off to different persons," said Karunakaran.
During investigation, the police team along with Hashim went to Aligarh and at his instance, four stolen cars were recovered from his garage at Harduaganj, Aligarh. Thereafter, he led the police team to his brother Nazim's garage and got recovered three more stolen cars.
However, Nazim managed to escape from there. The police team then visited Chander Shekhar's home at Harduaganj and apprehended him.
On his instance, police recovered two more stolen cars, which were parked in front of his house.
