After months of delay, the Delhi government on Monday rolled out the high security registration plates (HSRP) for vehicles in the city which will have features like laser hologram and prevent counterfeiting and duplication.
From Tuesday, all the new vehicles on the roads will have to install the HSRP. Installation of HSRP on existing vehicles will start from June 15.
Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said the issuance of HSRP has been made available at Transport department's office in Burari, and the facility will be extended in all Regional Transport Offices across the city soon.
Officials said that after purchasing a vehicle, the vehicle owner will have to go to designated office of the transport authority to get the HSRP installed.
They said that it may initially take a maximum of six days for getting the plate. But after setting up of the facilities at 15 transport authority offices, the waiting time will come down to two to three days, they added.
Mr Lovely said that the rates fixed for HSRP are lowest in the whole country. Officials said each HSRP for two-wheelers will cost Rs 69 while for a car the cost would be Rs 214 per plate. For three-wheelers, the cost per HSRP will be Rs 86.
The HSRPs will be made of one mm thick aluminium plate with a retro-reflective sheet, and will have a chromium based hologram and a unique laser code of a minimum of seven digits, besides a non-reusable snap lock.
"These features will add more security for every vehicle," said an official.
The contract for supplying HSRP has been awarded to Rosemerta Technologies Ltd.
The governments of various states and Union territories were warned by the Supreme Court in February to either ensure HSRP for all vehicles by June 15, this year or face contempt of court proceedings.
