In a first of its kind, Delhi government is set to introduce "paperless registration" of all types of vehicles in the national capital.
In the first phase of its pilot project, transport department, as an experiment, has started an online registration process for all private cars in the city, while in the second phase to begin next month, all two wheeler-vehicles will be registered online.
According to a senior official, with the launch of online registration process, government will also have exact numbers of vehicles being sold every day. At present, the department maintains such records through documentation process.
"With the start of online registration process, Delhiites will now be able to get registeration certificate (RC) at the earliest as all process from registering vehicles to depositing tax by the dealers will go online completely," said a senior government official.
"We are studying the first phase of this project and if we get good response, we will then start registering all two-wheelers online. We have plans to launch second phase next month," official said.
Sources said that government is also planning to register all commercial vehicles online, adding that it would benefit lakhs of people.
