New Delhi: The seventh edition of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon was flagged off today from the Jawahar Lal Nehru stadium in New Delhi. The annual event, which draws some of the biggest names in the world of long-distance running, saw over 30,000 people participating in various sub-events involving various distance-runs.
The main event, the 21.097-km Half Marathon was kicked off first followed by a 2.5-km Wheelchair race, a 4.3-km run for senior citizens and the 6-km Great Delhi Run.
Ethiopia's Seyisa Lilesa won in the men's elite section with a timing of 59:29 mins.
In the women's elite section, Lucy Kabuu of Kenya clocked 67:04 mins to win the half marathon.
The women's field included a strong line-up with defending champion Aselefech, fellow-Ethiopian and last year's runner-up Merima Mohammed, former World Half Marathon silver medallist Aberu Kebede competing with Ms Kabuu, this year's winner who was also the 2006 Commonwealth champion .
The Indian women's charge was led by defending champion Lalita Babbar and Mumbai marathon winner Priyanka Patel and Sudha Singh.
