Delhi heat: Water tankers for the very rich or very brave

Delhi heat: Water tankers for the very rich or very brave
New Delhi: In Delhi, the answer to your water woes is simple, at least according to Delhi Jal Board's (DJB) website.

If water supply to your colony is irregular, you can approach your local Jal Board office, book a tanker, and within three hours, a water tanker is supposed to be at your doorstep.

There are 39 water emergency locations across the city, according to the DJB website. This all sounds very convenient, except that much of it is on paper.

Across colonies in Delhi, that NDTV visited, people claimed that getting a tanker to visit home is not only difficult, but virtually impossible without money changing hands.

In the Krishna Park colony in South Delhi, angry residents told us that water is sold at the rate of Rs 50 per household by the Jal Board tankers, and if people refuse to pay, then tankers do not show up for as many as 15 days.

We decided to independently verify these claims, and followed a water tanker into Sangam Vihar, a South Delhi colony notorious for its water shortages. There, we shot footage through our mobile camera, of the water tanker driver accepting money from residents in exchange for what is supposed to be free water.

After the tanker left, we asked the residents why they paid up. And got responses we had heard earlier - that if money wasn't paid, tankers would just stop showing up.

When we asked Delhi Jal Board CEO Debashree Mukherjee for a response, we were told vigilance teams of the Board are in place and constantly carry out raids across location.

But clearly, what the Board is doing is not enough, as water starved residents struggle to get water tankers for their homes.
