Delhi High Court disposes of case against policeman who made constable crawl on ground
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has disposed of the case of a senior police officer of the Delhi Police having made his subordinate crawl on the ground in full public view.

The shocking incident came to light after lawyers, who had captured the video of the constable's alleged punishment on cellphone, filed a complaint against the officer, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Seju P Kuruvilla. Mr Kuruvilla was allegedly furious that a constable at a Delhi court did not recognise him or salute him. Mr Kuruvilla was in civilian clothes. He then allegedly ordered the constable to perform somersaults as a punishment.

Taking a serious note of the incident, the High Court had last week asked the Delhi Police to file an explanation, and called it a "brutal and inhuman act." The Delhi Police, in its status report, informed the court that what Mr Kuruvilla did was within the rules and that, police officers are often made to follow such drills.

The court while noting that the act may be within the rules, said that it should not be done on humanitarian grounds. The court also directed Police Commissioner BK Gupta to instruct all his officers against a repeat of such an act in public.

The court also dropped contempt proceedings against the officer.
