Delhi High Court stays fresh draw of lots for nursery admissions

Delhi High Court stays fresh draw of lots for nursery admissions
New Delhi: The nightmare over nursery admissions in Delhi continues. The Delhi High Court today stayed  admissions till March 24.

The court has asked the Delhi government to furnish details regarding nursery admissions in unaided private schools. A division bench of acting Chief Justice BD Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul stayed the fresh draw of lots for all seats. "The draw of lots...shall not take place. No admission be made till next date of hearing," said the bench, posting the matter for March 24.

The bench was hearing an appeal filed by some parents challenging a March 6 single-judge order asking the Delhi government to conduct a fresh draw of lots for all seats. The judge had said all candidates with equal marks shall be considered at par by conducting a draw of lots.

The parents filing the appeal claimed that their wards were already declared selected and would have to repeat the process.

The March 6 decision of the court had come after Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung scrapped five points, out of 100 points, given to inter-state transfer cases on February 27.

Both parents and schools had appealed against the contentious system, alleging that several fake transfer cases were getting admission into schools ahead of those who had been living near the schools for years, thus rendering the neighbourhood criteria in admissions defunct.

The new nursery guidelines have been criticised on several fronts, be it over multiple lotteries, duplicate entries or allegations of fake transfers or even the scrapping of the school's management quota.
