Delhi: Light Showers Make for Pleasant Day

New Delhi: Weather continued to be pleasant in the national capital today as light rains kept the mercury below the 40 degrees Celsius mark for second consecutive day.

The maximum temperature settled at 37.1 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal.

Earlier, overnight showers caused the minimum temperature to dip to 25.5 degrees, two points below normal. Delhiites woke up to light showers and partly cloudy skies this morning, with the city receiving more rains later in the day.

Day temperatures at almost all observatories in the city including Palam hovered around 37-38 degrees Celsius.

According to the MeT department, the national capital received 1.3-mm rainfall in the 24 hours till 8:30 in the morning, while the rain gauge measured 2.6-mm of rain between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm.

However, as rains lashed the city, humidity levels soared which was recorded between 55 and 83 per cent during the day causing some discomfort to Delhiites.

he intermittent rains since Thursday have come as a relief for the city residents, who were reeling under sweltering heatwave conditions with temperatures hovering around 45 degrees Celsius for about a week.

"As rainfall continues, temperature is expected to be between 35 and 40 degrees Celsius till June 20. We are expecting more rain in the next two to three days," said a MeT Department official.

The weatherman predicted that the maximum and minimum temperatures may settle around 38 and 27 degrees Celsius tomorrow. There would be partly cloudy sky and very light rains, and thunderstorms may occur in some areas.

Yesterday, maximum temperature settled at 36.4 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal while minimum temperature was recorded at 25.5 degrees.

The spell of extreme hot weather conditions in Delhi began on June 3 when mercury crossed the 40 degrees mark to settle at 41.7 degrees. The next day, it soared to 43.4 degrees Celsius.

On June 5, the day temperature soared to 44.7 degrees.

The mercury bettered its record the next day on June 6 when it settled at 45 degrees Celsius, crossing the 45-degrees mark for the first time this season.

Meanwhile, temperature at Palam observatory had been touching new highs everyday. It registered 47.2 degrees on June 6, setting a new record for the last 19 years.

On June 7, the day temperature at Palam was 47 degrees.

The next day, the mercury shot up yet again to settle at 47.8, shattering all records of the last 62 years.
