New Delhi: Enraged over his mother not agreeing to sell their house, a drunken man strangled his 80-year-old mother and then slammed her head on the floor in Mongolpuri in northwest Delhi, police said on Friday. The man has been arrested.
The accused Somnath, 40, allegedly strangled Amar Devi and hit her head on the floor on Thursday.
The deceased had transferred the ownership of property in the name of her grandson Gautam.
"Somnath is a drunkard. His wife had left him and his son is being looked after by his sister," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Chhaya Sharma said.
Police were informed by the officials of Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, when the deceased's daughter Surjeet Kaur rushed her to the hospital. Amar Devi succumbed to injuries during the treatment.
Kaur told police that Devi was living with her son Somnath, who is a driver. Somnath used to enter into a quarrel regularly and tell her to sell the house.
The accused's elder brother Kishan Lal had also left the house around two years ago due to his brother's alcoholic attitude.
Somnath told police that he is jobless and has no source of income.
"So he decided to sell his old house," the officer added. Somnath got furious over his mother's refusal and hit her.
