New Delhi:
A US-based NRI woman was arrested on Thursday for allegedly torturing her domestic help, according to the police. Arti Jain, 45, was arrested from her Mayur Vihar Phase-I residence in east Delhi.
"The victim was working at Jain's house for over four months. She was employed through a placement agency," a police officer said.
The 24-year-old domestic help, who is from West Bengal, told the police that she was burnt by her employer with a hot iron whenever she demanded her salary. The woman has alleged that she was kept confined in the house, and had managed to get out of the house on Wednesday and call out to a neighbour for help.
The neighbour reportedly informed the police, who raided Ms Jain's house on Thursday, where the victim was found locked inside a room.
"The victim would get stale food to eat and was beaten up several times for minor mistakes. There were also some dog bite marks on her body," said the officer.
The accused, who has been living in India for the past four years, had come to Delhi for the treatment of her mother.
The incident took place around a week after the arrest of Bahujan Samaj Party parliamentarian Dhananjay Singh and his dentist wife for allegedly torturing their domestic help to death.
