New Delhi:
Police call 36-year-old Vikram Rampal the "super escape artist" as he had fled from police custody thrice and jumped parole twice in the past 17 years.
Rampal's latest escape from custody was on November 24 last year when he was brought to a hospital for treatment but he was arrested again yesterday on a tip-off, Ashok Chand, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), said.
"After fleeing, he managed to get a room on rent at Govindpuri and was planning to commit crime in order to earn quick money and then flee to Jammu and Kashmir," Chand said.
Rampal, who entered the world of crime at the age of 12 in 1986, is allegedly involved in 19 cases including that of murder, extortion, kidnapping, robbery and thefts.
"On November 24, he was brought for dental treatment at Maulana Azad Medical College by two policemen. X-ray of his teeth was conducted and while being escorted back he managed to flee. He fled from the doctor's entrance as he had observed earlier that few people used that entrance," he said.
However, Rampal and his associate Mohd Altaf were arrested from Kalkaji while planning to commit a robbery.
Rampal studied in a reputed school but dropped out and started committing thefts and robberies.
"In 1989, he committed his first robbery in Defence Colony. In 1990, he got involved in a murder case and was sentenced to life imprisonment. In Tihar Jail, he came in contact with Altaf who had been sentenced to jail for 10 years in 1998 and was serving time," Chand said.
He first escaped from custody in October 1993 when he gave a slip to the police personnel posted for guard duties in Patiala House Court. He found the police personnel busy in other duties and quietly slipped away from the court premises.
He was later caught in 1995.
His second escape came three years later in July 1996 when a constable was taking him to produce him in Patiala House court. While climbing the stairs, he pushed the constable and escaped.
However, he was arrested within 13 days of his escape.
He had twice jumped parole and allegedly indulged in extortion.
