New Delhi: In broad daylight on one of Delhi's most busy streets, a police officer was attacked with rods, bats and stones and kicked multiple times by a woman and her friend.
Amit Singh, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, was assaulted near the Lodhi Road crematorium in south Delhi at around 4.30 in the afternoon.
He was not in uniform and was heading to the Police Headquarters when his car reportedly grazed a bike and an argument erupted.
The biker was allegedly being followed in another car by his mother, who stopped when she saw the fight. The police say she was the main attacker; she picked up a helmet and hit the officer first. Her friend allegedly attacked him with a stone.
Senior police officers soon arrived at the spot and caught the three.
The badly injured officer is being treated at the AIIMS hospital.
Police sources say the incident is being treated as one of road rage. They have not linked it to attacks on Delhi policemen recently, since Mr Singh was not in uniform and was not using his official car.
