Delhi: Task force reviews safety issues of women
New Delhi: The special task force, constituted in the wake of the December 2012 brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old girl, has reviewed safety issues of women in Delhi and taken stock of the functioning of Delhi Police and its helplines.

The task force, headed by Union Home Secretary Anil Goswami at meeting held yesterday, reviewed the status of different helplines, PCR vans, DTC cluster bus service and women help desks in police stations among other issues.

While reviewing helpline No.100, Delhi Police conveyed that the helpline has been revamped and the number of lines has been increased from 60 lines to 100.

The number of lines of helpline 1091 meant for women in distress has been increased from 2 to 10. Number of lines in anti-stalking helpline No 1096 has been increased to 14.

The meeting stressed the need for installation of more street lights in the capital and directed the civic bodies to do the needful for their early installation in those areas where there are very few street lights.

The Home Secretary mentioned that the unlit bus-stops should be provided with illumination facility in a time-bound manner.

The task force decided that the Home Ministry will take up with telecom authorities to ensure the location of the tower and the caller in distress, particularly women, are available to the PCR van immediately. This measure will help the police to reach caller in distress faster.

Regarding the display of name, photograph of driver and staff inside buses, Delhi Police has been asked to verify these public vehicles and start impounding those violating the revised permit conditions with immediate effect.

The issues of photo identity card for public service vehicle crew, CCTV/webcam at parking and shopping malls, verification of school bus staff, vulnerable bus routes and street-lighting were also reviewed by the task force.
