A teacher attacked a Class 5 student with scissors and flung her from the first floor of a government school building in Delhi today.
The child, Vandana, was taken to hospital in a critical state but is believed to be out of danger. Gita Deshwal, the teacher, has been arrested. She has been suspended by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which runs the school.
The incident took place at around 11.15 am at the Delhi Nagar Nigam Prathmik Vidyalaya.
Gita Deshwal allegedly attacked Vandana with a pair of scissors used in craft before throwing her off the first-floor classroom in a fit of rage.
Another teacher, Riya, reportedly tried to intervene but failed to stop her colleague from throwing the girl down.
When the girl fell from the first floor, a large crowd gathered. A resident took the severely injured child to the Bara Hindu Rao hospital.
"All necessary tests, including a CT scan, have been done. The child is safe and stable and responding well," said an MCD official.
Vandana's mother wept when she learnt how her child was thrown down.
The residents also called the police, who took the teacher away. She will face attempted murder charges, said senior police officer Shweta Chauhan, citing witness statements.
At the spot where the child fell, a pair of gloves and some stationery was found scattered.
A large number of people, including outraged parents, protested at the school after the incident. The crowd dispersed when the police arrived and assured action against the teacher.
Images showed the child's classroom in a mess, with stationery, bags and furniture strewn about. Students ran out of the classroom in fear as the teacher tried to harm them, the police said.
A parent of another Class 5 student alleged that the headmaster didn't speak to parents. "Is this the way the school is educating children, by beating and harming them with scissors? Do we send our children to school for this. Who will take responsibility for this," he was quoted as telling news agency PTI.
