Delhi: Technical snag leads to Metro delay, thousands stranded
New Delhi: In the second such incident in 10 days, thousands of Metro commuters had a harrowing experience on Sunday evening after they were left stranded at various stations on the Gurgaon route as services were disrupted due to a problem in the Over-head Electrification (OHE).

The commuters, most of whom had gone out for Sunday shopping with their families, were in for a shock when they were told at the Metro stations that there were inordinate delays in services due to problem in the OHE.

Last week, same problem had led to disruption of services on portion of the same Line 2 (Jehangirpuri-HUDA City Centre) for over four hours and DMRC chief E Sreedharan constituted a committee to look into the incident.

The problem on Over-head Electrification between Central Secretariat and Sultanpur stations led to complete disruption of services between Central Secretariat and HUDA City Centre (Gurgaon), Metro officials said.

Sparks were noticed on the OHE and engineers were working on the problem.

Hundreds of people could be seen standing outside at Sultanpur, MG Road and other stations in Gurgaon after the problem erupted at around 9.20 pm during the evening hours.

A DMRC spokesman said train services on the Central Secretariat-Sultanpur stretch were affected due to the problem in OHE.

He, however, said services between Central Secretariat and Jehangirpuri were not affected and remained normal.

It was chaos at all stations on the Line as thousands of people were stranded there for more than an hour waiting for trains, but in vain.

Stations like M G Road, Sultanpur and Udyog Bhawan were closed for some time and passengers were not allowed inside. Huge queues could be seen at some stations with passengers demanding refund of their tickets.

S Muthuvel, General Manager of a top retail firm, took his wife and mother for shopping in Gurgaon in Metro as he did not like taking his car out on a Sunday.

"That proved very costly for me. We reached the MG Road Station at around 9.30 PM and we were not allowed entry inside the station. They said there were technical glitches and trains were not running," he said.

Muthuvel had to shell out Rs 300 to reach his home in Vasant Kunj by an auto-rickshaw after he failed to get a cab.

"I could see hundreds of people waiting at every metro station after being denied entry."

OHE problems on Metro trains have become common now, but Metro officials say technical glitches are common in any Metro system.
