Delhi to get its first mono rail by 2017

New Delhi: The national capital will get its first mono rail network by 2017, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said on Tuesday.

"I hope in next two or three years or definitely by 2017 we will get the first mono rail in Delhi," Dikshit said at the inaugural session of a two-day seminar on Indo-Japan Monorail and Light Rail Transit (LRT).

"A study was conducted on the feasibility of mono rail in the national capital by the Delhi Metro. We have come to a conclusion that 11 km of mono rail will ply in east Delhi between Shastri Park and Trilokpuri," Ms Dikshit said.

"This is a beginning. We need to identify many more corridors for the mono rail," she added.

The first monorail corridor from Shastri Park to Trilokpuri will have 12 stations.

According to the urban development ministry, mono rail can supplement the metro, as the mono rail can handle much sharper curves, and ply in populated areas.

The urban development ministry and Delhi government want to develop monorail corridors in various parts of Delhi to take public transport to congested colonies where mass rapid transport like Metro cannot be constructed.
