New Delhi:
With an aim of providing a push to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mission of a 'clean India', Delhi BJP yesterday decided to hold a World Toilet Summit in November in collaboration with the World Toilet Organisation.
The decision was taken after WTO founder Professor Jack Sim met Delhi BJP President Satish Upadhyay and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and expressed his willingness to start a clean-toilet campaign in India.
The summit, which would be a first of its kind in India, will be held in the city on Nov. 19, which is observed by WTO as World Toilet Day under the auspices of United Nations.
World Toilet Summits have been held on this date for the last 14 years.
Professor Sim told Mr Gadkari that he was inspired to plan a drive in India by Mr Modi's Independence Day speech in which he had stressed upon the need for cleanliness.
Professor Sim further said he had selected Mr Modi's birthday as the date for presenting his proposal.
He said there has been no real campaign for toilets of international standards in India and Mr Modi's concerns regarding hygiene and sanitation shows his sensitivity on the issue.
Meanwhile, Delhi BJP yesterday dispatched five trucks of relief material for flood victims in Jammu and Kashmir.
BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav said on the occasion that party workers were contributing for the relief effort as envisaged by Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.
