Delhi Violence Highlights: Fresh Violence Erupts In Delhi's Bhajanpura, 27 Killed Since Sunday

Delhi Violence: Several areas in northeast Delhi witnessed large scale violence on Tuesday.

In his first reaction to incidents of violence in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today appealed for peace and brotherhood, and said he has held an extensive review of the prevailing situation in various parts of the national capital. He also said it was important that calm and normalcy was restored at the earliest. "Had an extensive review on the situation prevailing in various parts of Delhi. Police and other agencies are working on the ground to ensure peace and normalcy," PM Modi tweeted. "Peace and harmony are central to our ethos. I appeal to my sisters and brothers of Delhi to maintain peace and brotherhood at all times," he added.

Twenty-seven people have been killed and at least 200 injured in communal violence in northeast Delhi for the last few days.

On the other hand, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said, Union Home Minister Amit Shah must take responsibility for violence in Delhi and resign, hitting out at the government over the large-scale violence that has erupted in parts of northeast Delhi. "What was the Home Minister doing since last week? What was the Home Minister doing earlier this week? Why were the paramilitary forces not called in earlier when the Home Ministry saw the situation worsening," Mrs Gandhi said at a press conference at the Congress headquarters in the capital.

The violence-hit areas continue to remain tense, with police and paramilitary personnel on the ground.  Late last night, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited areas affected by the violence and met with top police officers. Mr Doval visited areas such as Seelampur, Jaffrabad, Maujpur and Gokulpuri Chowk to take stock of the law and order situation.

Delhi Violence "Colossal Failure" Of Delhi Poilce: P Chidambaram
Congress leader P Chidambaram Wednesday said the violence in the national capital was a "colossal failure" of the Delhi Police and a culpable negligence of the city administration, even as he attacked Home Minister Amit Shah. 

P Chidambaram also asked why those who made inflammatory speeches have not yet been arrested or charged.

The Congress leader asked where the Home Minister, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and the city''s Police Commissioner were since Sunday, when the violence first broke out, news agency PTI reported.

Compensation Of Rs 2 lakh To Be Paid To Families Of Those Killed In Delhi Violence: Official
A compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be paid to the family of the people who have died in the communal violence over the amended citizenship law in northeast Delhi, senior officials said on Wednesday.

At least 27 deaths have been reported in the violence over the last few days. 

"A compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be paid to the next of family of the people who have died in the communal violence. Persons who have been seriously injured will be given a relief amount of Rs 50,000," a senior official told PTI.

Rajinikanth Condemns Centre Over Delhi Violence
Superstar Rajinikanth on Wednesday lashed out at the central government over the violence in Delhi that left 22 people dead, saying the riots should have been dealt with an iron fist.

The actor also opined that protests should not turn violent and recalled his earlier statement that he will stand by Muslims if they were affected by the amended citizenship law.

"Definitely it is Central government's intelligence failure. I strongly condemn the Central government," he told reporters in Chennai.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Visits Northeast Delhi
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the violence-hit northeast Delhi on Wednesday. According to an official, the chief minister also visited the office of deputy commissioner of police (northeast). He was accompanied Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and AAP leader Sanjay Singh.

Earlier in the day, Mr Kejriwal said his government would give a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the family of head constable Ratan Lal who was killed in violence, news agency PTI reported.
