Delhi faced traffic snarls yet again today around the ITO intersection and the Sarai Kale Khan bus station. The reason: A massive cave-in at Bhairon road which connects Mathura Road with the Ring Road that officials say could take between two to three weeks to repair.
The first cave-in happened on Sunday after which it was repaired by the Public Works Department or PWD. But, the repairs gave away on Monday afternoon exposing a deeper problem: A damaged pipe which is 6.5 feet wide and is placed under 28 feet.
PWD officials said it is not for the Delhi Jal Board that handles water supply to Delhi fix the problem before they can resume repairs. PWD Engineer Virender Singh said, "We are waiting for the Delhi Jal Board to do something without which we can't start the repair work."
DJB Superintendent Engineer VK Gupta told NDTV, "One reason for the cave in could be the sewer was laid 60 years back. Probably, its foundation, what we call the bed of the pipe that has caved in...with passage of time a cavity has developed which has suddenly given away."
Officials say fixing the problem entirely will take between two to three weeks.
Muktesh Chander, Delhi Traffic Police chief said, "We are trying to take the traffic in one Lane...so that through one lane traffic can flow from the Mathura Road side to the Ring road side."
