Majeet Singh Mahal, one of the 'most wanted' gangster of Delhi, was arrested and a 9 mm pistol with 52 live cartridges were seized from his possession by police today from South-West Delhi's Dwarka area.
Mahal was allegedly involved in about two dozen cases of extortion, murder, attempt to murder and Arms Act. He is wanted in two sensational murder cases including gunning down of ex-MLA Bharat Singh on March 2015 and killing of Sunil alias Doctor in December 2015, said P S Kushwah, DCP(Special Cell).
A reward of Rs 50,000 has been declared by Delhi Police Commissioner on his arrest, the DCP said.
The officer said that Special Cell was tracking Mahal for the past two days after specific input was received that he was roaming in Delhi-NCR area to procure sophisticated firearms to allegedly eliminate members of his rival Kishan Pehalwan gang.
Teams were deputed at Najafgarh, Dwarka, Gurgaon and Chattarpur to locate hideouts of the gangster and he was finally arrested around 1 pm while trying to meet an associate in Dwarka, DCP Kushwah said.
Mahal along with his associates had allegedly gunned down ex-MLA Bharat Singh while attending a religious ceremony, in presence of scores of people, at Abhinandan Garden in Najafgarh on March 29 last year. Police had arrested some of the accused while Mahal and another main accused Hemant were absconding, said the officer.
Mahal was arrested earlier in 2013 in connection with an attempt to murder one Dheerpal at B4 Chowk on Narela Road. He, however, was released on bail and went into hiding after that.
A resident of Mitraon Kalan village in south west Delhi, Mahal's name first came on police record in a case of criminal intimidation registered at Inderpuri police station.
"After this he never looked back and entered deeper into the world of crime and became an active member of Balraj gang of his native village," Mr Kushwah said.
After death of Balraj he became head of the gang that was involved in several heinous crimes in Delhi NCR, he added.
