New Delhi:
Dense fog descended over some parts of the capital this morning even as the minimum temperature rose by a degree.
The mercury dipped to 5.2 degrees Celsius, two degrees below normal and up from yesterday's 3.4 degrees Celsius, while the maximum was at 22.3 degrees, two degrees above
normal and up from yesterday's 20.3 degrees.
However, the fog cover over the city reduced visibility to 200 metres in the morning and slowed down vehicular movement. But there were no reports of any traffic pile-up.
At the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), officials said that the operations remained largely unaffected though there were a couple of weather-related delays as general visibility fell below 50 metres.
The Met office has predicted fog for two more days in the capital with temperature oscillating between four and 21 degrees Celsius.
Christmas day was the chilliest day of the season so far with mercury dropping to 2.9 degree Celsius.
In December last year, the minimum had come down to 5.2 degrees C on the 22nd of the month. In the past decade, the lowest minimum for the month was recorded on December 12, 2005 when the mercury recorded 3.3 degrees C while the highest maximum was 28.4 degrees C on December 15, 2003.
The record for the lowest minimum for the month of December is 1.1 degrees C recorded on the 26th of the month in 1945 and the highest maximum was 29.3 degrees C on third of the
month in 1987.
