Congress-backed NSUI makes comeback in DUSU elections, wins top posts

The Congress-linked NSUI or National Students Union of India today celebrated what it described as its "major comeback" after winning the top two posts of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU), leaving two for its rival Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which is linked to the BJP.
The NSUI says it has actually won three of the four posts, and that it will contest the results in the Delhi High Court. The ABVP held three posts in the outgoing panel.
ABVP's Amit Tanwar will be replaced as Delhi University president by NSUI's Rocky Tuseer, who, along with other NSUI leaders, met with Congress president Sonia Gandhi this evening.
Top Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi held up the result as a sign that younger people, especially students, are once again warming up to the party. "Congratulations @nsui on a stellar performance and Pres win in DUSU! Thank students of DU for reposing faith in Congress ideology," tweeted Rahul Gandhi, who is in the US.
Other Congress leaders, starved of good news in any election, tweeted keenly on the result.
The NSUI has won the DUSU president's post for the first time since 2012. The ABVP has been dominating the Delhi University elections for the past few years in a straight contest with the NSUI. Last year, the ABVP had won three posts while NSUI was able to jam a foot in by winning one post - that of joint secretary.
"After Rajasthan, Punjab, now NSUI's win in Delhi student polls proves that the youth have rejected Modiji's false promises of acche din," tweeted Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.
An ABVP member, reacting to the union's setback, said: "We were in the union for four years. These are dirty tricks by the Left and NSUI. The Left put out dummy candidates to help the NSUI win."
The Delhi University boost for the Congress comes after its disappointment at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, where the Left alliance won all four seats, defeating the ABVP. Bleakly for the Congress, more students voted for NOTA or None of The Above than the NSUI.
