New Delhi: A fire broke out on a metro train at the Patel Nagar Metro Station in New Delhi on Thursday due to possible "sparks" in the air conditioning system.

Pictures and videos on social media showed plumes of white smoke billowing out of the air conditioning unit of a stationary Delhi Metro train.

The incident took place at the Patel Nagar Metro Station at around 4 pm. All passengers were safely evacuated at the next stop at Rajendra Place station and no one was injured, officials said.

According to fire officials, four fire engines were rushed to the spot to respond to the fire at the Patel Nagar Metro Station.

Metro services on Delhi Metro's Blue Line, connecting Delhi's Dwarka to Vaishali and Noida areas of Uttar Pradesh, were affected due to the incident.

"The smoke was reported in the last coach of train (sixth coach) by passengers at Patel Nagar station. As a precaution, the coach was evacuated in the next station. The train was thereafter withdrawn from the service and sent for investigation. But terming it as a fire would be an exaggeration," a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesperson said.

The DMRC, which carries nearly 30 lakh passengers across its corridors daily, has reported no such incident before, although it said that its staff is trained to tackle situations like this.
