Four held for smuggling gold bars worth Rs 78 lakh at Delhi airport

New Delhi: Four persons, including one who tried to smuggle gold bars concealed in his abdomen, were arrested in two separate incidents of smuggling at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) in Delhi.

All four, who were involved in alleged smuggling of three kilograms of gold valuing over Rs 78 lakh, have been arrested, a customs official said.

Acting on a tip-off, the customs officials had on Wednesday intercepted Dilare Singh and Jitender Singh on their arrival in Delhi from Bangkok.

"On detailed examination of their baggage and personal search, two kilograms of gold bars were found being concealed in two TV stands provided with 32 inches Samsung LED TVs," a press release issued today by the customs said.

The duo, who live in Shastri Nagar area of the national capital, were arrested and the recovered gold was seized.

On the basis of duo's interrogation, another person Pramod Saini, who was waiting to receive them, was also arrested, it said.

In another incident, Sanjay Kumar was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle a gold bar weighing a kilogram by hiding it in his lower abdomen.

Following intelligence and suspicion of his involvement in alleged smuggling, Kumar was intercepted on his arrival and his baggage and personal search was conducted, the release said.

The search did not detect any gold and the officials then decided to conduct Kumar's full body X-ray.

The total value of seized gold in both the cases is more than Rs 78 lakh, the release said.
