New Delhi: After Arvind Kejriwal's Rs 550 crore loan, it is Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung's turn to make a contribution to end the sanitation workers' strike that is stinking up the city. He offered to loan Rs 300 crore to civic bodies today.
Mr Jung has offered this money from the city planner Delhi Development Authority (DDA), which he heads as Lieutenant Governor.
This morning, the High Court tore into the civic agencies and the state government saying they were "sitting by" while the citizens of the capital suffered.
"Residents of Delhi are suffering due to the fight between the Delhi government and MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi)," the court said.
Along with the money that the Delhi government has released to the civic bodies, the DDA's loan will raise the money offered to the struggling civic bodies to Rs 1,000 crore. This will take care of salaries till March, say officials.
Around 60,000 sanitation workers have been on strike for over a week, alleging that they haven't been paid since October. The protest has led to trash piling up across the city and even being dumped deliberately outside the homes of Delhi ministers.
Mr Jung appealed to the protesting workers to call off their strike and return to work in the interest of the city. He has also promised to speak to the Delhi Government for a long term solution.
