Sheila Dikshit address media on onion crisis
New Delhi:
Sheila Dikshit addresses media on onion prices. Here are the highlights:
- Met Sharad Pawar and KV Thomas a couple of days earlier. We requested them to provide us some relief from the onion crisis as Delhi is not a producing state.
- We were also concerned that due to code of conduct we may not be able to continue selling onions at a lower rate through Delhi government's special vans.
- But Election Commission accepted our request and gave us permission to continue onion vans.
- 125 such vans will be operation from Monday. 80 to be functional by tomorrow.
- Tomorrow, our officers will go to Alwar in Rajasthan to get further supply.
- We are already getting supply from Nashik.
- Onions are being sold at Rs 60 per kg in government stalls.
- We are moving from summer to winter vegetables. So there will be some alterations. After many weeks, I had onions in my bhindi!
- I guess Food Ministry is thinking of banning export of onions. I cannot say with certainty, but I guess it should be banned, if our country needs it more.
Haroon Yusuf on onion prices:
- We got 1400 metric tonnes of onion yesterday. Today we have got 1600 metric tonnes.
Rajkumar Chauhan:
- Onion produce from Rajasthan will help in bringing down prices a lot.
- Last time, in 1998, onion prices had touched Rs 100.
- There is a lot of difference between Delhi then and Delhi now.
- Our officers are raiding. But so far none of them have reported hoarding in Delhi.
