New Delhi: A day after a Class 12 student was shot dead in broad daylight at her house in south Delhi's Munirka area, chilling details are emerging of the cold-blooded murder. The accused, a distant relative of the victim, killed the girl after she spurned his proposal for marriage, the Delhi Police said today.

The accused, 22-year-old Subhash, had asked the victim, 18-year-old Pinki, to marry her but she allegedly refused, saying he didn't deserve her as she was more educated than him. Subhash has studied up to Class 8.

"Subhash met Pinky at a marriage ceremony a few years back, and they grew to be closely acquainted. The girl later started keeping her distance as she was more educated than him," Deputy Commissioner of Police BS Jaiswal said.

The incident occurred on Friday at around 10 am when Subhash allegedly barged into the girl's house, aware that the latter's parents were not present at the time. He then reportedly entered the victim's room and bolted the door from within.

When he allegedly confronted the girl, she raised an objection to his presence in the house. He then took out his country-made gun, concealed in a paper bag, and shot the girl in the chest at close range, according to the police.

Subhash then fled from the spot but was arrested from Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat area in the evening.

Pinki's father is a plumber and her mother works as a domestic help. At the time of the incident, both had gone to work. The girl was the couple's only child.
