Helmets Made Necessary for Delhi Women, Sikhs Exempted

New Delhi: Women riding pillion on two-wheelers in the capital will now have to wear helmets as the new rules came into force on Thursday. Those belonging to the Sikh community have been exempted on religious grounds.

The Delhi government on Thursday notified the amendment to rule 115 of the Delhi Motor Vehicles Rules, 1993.

The transport department had sought suggestions from the public on its decision of making helmets mandatory for women after Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung had approved the proposal.

As many as 576 two-wheeler riders lost their lives in accidents in 2012.
