Housewife arrested with 34 kg ganja

Delhi: A house-wife and a man hailing from Assam were arrested in north Delhi allegedly with 34 kg of ganja, police said today.

Rashmi from Dorang district and Uttpal Barman from Nalwari district were apprehended on Monday evening after the police found them moving suspiciously near Kishan Ganj Railway Station.

According to police, it was huge debt that prompted Rashmi to enter the world of drug peddling while an accident forced labourer Barman to act as a courier.

"Our patrolling party found a man and a woman hiding themselves in the bushes after seeing police. They were carrying two bags with them. The police team checked their bags and found ganja in them," S S Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), said.

Police recovered 16.6 kg of ganja from Rashmi while 16.64 kg was seized from Barman.

Rashmi and her farmer-husband are in huge debt and wanted to earn some quick money to settle their financial problems. So she started bringing the contraband to Delhi to deliver it to one Raju, Yadav said.

"Raju had engaged both of them to bring ganja to Delhi from Assam. He promised them Rs 1,000 each apart from all expenses. Rashmi had earlier also brought a consignment of ganja from Assam and had handed over it to Raju in Karol Bagh," Yadav said.

Burman met Raju at the roadside eatery in Guwahati where they worked and soon became friends.

"Burman left the job soon and went back to his native place where he could not find any work. On Raju's advice, he came to Delhi and worked as a labourer but met with an accident.

"When he sought some money from Raju, he told him to go to Guwahati and bring ganja alongwith Rashmi. A man gave two bags to Rashmi who handed over one bag to Raju and they reached Delhi at Anand Vihar Railway Station," Yadav said.

They reached Kishanganj where they were to meet Raju, who did not turn up, and they landed in police net.
