New Delhi: A huge fire broke out in a multi-storey office building in West Delhi's Pitampura on Sunday, damaging gutting much of the building's top floors but with no reports of casualties.
Security guards saw smoke saw smoke coming out from a ventilation panel on the tenth floor of the building and raised an alarm. People posted images of billowing clouds of smoke on social media.
The fire department said they received the call for the fire around 4:25 pm and dispatched 22 vehicles to bring the fire under control.
Early investigations suggest that the fire broke out in the generator compartment on the 13th floor due to a malfunction.
Firemen on a hydraulic platform struggled to douse the flames for more than two hours.
By around 7:30 pm officials said they had completely doused the fire. "The situation is under control. There are no casualties," a fire officer Rajesh Pawar told news agency ANI.
A senior fire official said that the building fire safety system was found to be non-functioning.
Being a Sunday, the office was closed with just few people who managed to exit the building safely.
Police said that the exact cause of the fire will be determined after an investigation.
The building is close to the Netaji Subhash Place metro station.
