In Delhi, A Long Wait for Swine Flu Test Results

Delhi has recorded over 1,400 cases of swine flu so far.

New Delhi:

Swine flu has claimed six lives in Delhi, but over 1,400 people have been affected so far. And while the numbers are lower than elsewhere in the country - 631 deaths overall - it has created enormous pressure on the people, who want to get tested when they show some symptoms of the virus.

The government claims it takes three days for the result but Chandersen has waited for his nephew's test result for five days now. The dilemma many are facing is whether to wait a few days to get test results from government labs, where tests are free or go to private labs, where one has to pay anything between Rs 3,000 and 9,000 per test for a quicker result.

"I paid Rs 5,200 to a private lab to get the swine flu test. It took three days for the result," said one of the relatives outside a government-run hospital in Delhi.

"We only take 35-40 samples a day, but we use the best FDA approved imported diagnostic kits. There is no compromise on quality or accuracy and the reports are prepared in a few hours itself," said Dr Navin Dang of one of the leading private labs, Dr Dang's Lab.

But with 1,400 positive cases and many more suspected, the wait is tortuous for relatives.

The government has 25 centres across the city where it can handle cases of swine flu. There are three government laboratories and seven private laboratories that can conduct diagnostic tests.
Also, without an accurate diagnosis, the treatment is symptomatic.

The government has assured people that there is more than adequate stock of medicines. It also plans to address the issue of overcharging at private labs. "If exorbitant charges are being levied on patients we will write to these labs and look into these allegations," Delhi Health Minister Dr Satyender Jain told NDTV.

It is not only the delay but a question of limited options that are driving many towards private labs, even though they can cost thousands to conduct one test and that's the real quandary many are faced with.
