Delhi BJP leader Vijay Goel, one of the many Chief Ministerial contenders in the party
New Delhi:
43 days before Delhi votes, the BJP's leadership crisis in the capital has gone public.
Former Delhi health minister Harsh Vardhan, who is said to be the BJP's favourite for presumptive Chief Minister, today appeared to criticise his party president and rival Vijay Goel for marching to the homes of senior BJP leaders in a show of strength.
"I personally agree... that a public display of supporters on the streets can be avoided," said Dr Harsh Vardhan, not naming Mr Goel.
But he cautiously added that it was a part of "a larger democratic freedom in the party."
The BJP is expected to announce its candidate for Delhi chief minister this week, so that its campaign has a face to counter three-time chief minister Shiela Dikshit of the Congress.
But the party's biggest headache is to deal with multiple claims for the job, most notably from Vijay Goel, who has been waiting in the wings for many years and claims to enjoy the support of the party's grassroots workers in Delhi.
Mr Goel has denied that he has threatened to quit the party if he is not announced the BJP's presumptive Chief Minister, but sources say he has made his displeasure clear to the top leaders, who are now attempting to convince him to back down.
"The party president (Rajnath Singh) will decide on the Chief Ministerial candidate, we have so many faces," said Dr Harsh Vardhan, said to be favoured by many in the party for his clean image and reputation as an efficient administrator.
The BJP has not been in power in the capital for the past 15 years and is said to see its best chance yet to stage a comeback in the assembly elections be held on December 4.
This time, it also has to contend with a third angle in Delhi - Arvind Kejriwal's new Aam Aadmi Party, which is set to make its election debut and could make a dent in the Congress and BJP votes.
