New Delhi:
Three days after 80 to 90 Rolex watches worth Rs eight to nine crore were stolen from a high-end showroom in the heart of the national capital, investigators are still groping in the dark without any definitive leads.
The theft had taken place on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday at Cooke & Kelvey showroom, the official Rolex retailer situated in Scindia House of Connaught Place area.
Police had registered a case of theft at the Barakhamba Police Station in this regard.
"There is no definitive lead in this matter. This is a priority case for us and an inspector has been asked to investigate it thoroughly. We are probing it from all possible angles," said Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) SBS Tyagi.
Lack of CCTV cameras at the showroom has hampered police investigation.
Police has now sought CCTV footage from a neighbouring jewellery showroom to examine it and see whether any suspects are seen it or not.
"The shutter of the showroom was not broken from anywhere. It seems that a spade was inserted as a lever beneath the shutter of the showroom and it was lifted to provide entry to a child or a very thin person who carried out the robbery. Either there is a highly professional gang which carried out the theft with clinical precision or there is an
insider involved," said Tyagi.
Fingerprints of a child have been found by the forensic team and they are being examined. Investigators are also trying to trace gangs who carry out thefts by lifting shutters
in such a way.
The incident was reported to police on Tuesday morning in which the complainant told police that around 80 to 90 Rolex watches worth eight to nine crores were stolen from Cooke &
Kelvey showroom in the night.
Watches stolen in this case costs around eight to ten lakh per unit. All the watches which were stolen from the showroom were insured.
The investigators have also questioned the security guard, who was sleeping outside the showroom when the incident took place but nothing concrete has come out so far.
The police, however, are puzzled by a few aspects in this theft which include lack of CCTV cameras at the showroom and the robber not stealing gold jewellery.
"Interestingly, the showroom also had gold jewellery but it was not stolen. The thief only targeted Rolex watches which were insured," Tyagi has said yesterday.
