JNU Protest Continues, Police Still Clueless About Missing Najeeb

Najeeb Ahmed went missing on the intervening night of October 14-15 after being beaten by mob of students

New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University students on Monday continued their protest demanding action into the mysterious disappearance of Najeeb Ahmed, a first-year student at the university who has been missing for 17 days.

Najeeb Ahmed went missing on the intervening night of October 14-15 after being beaten by a 20-strong mob of students who had gone campaigning to his door for hostel elections.

About 100-125 students gathered at the Administrative Block inside the university campus and voiced their concern about Najeeb's safety and called on university officials to bring his assaulters to book.

"The movement will be intensified further now. It has been 17 days since Najeeb's disappearance and no action has been taken against the students who had beaten him," Rama Naga, ex-General Secretary of JNUSU, told IANS.

"Members of the students' union and Najeeb's family will meet the Delhi Chief Minister tomorrow (Tuesday) and raise the issue with him. We are also exploring our legal options against the varsity officials for their failure to act judiciously," he added.

After an FIR was filed by Najeeb's mother, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Delhi Police was also formed to trace Ahmed.

"We are working very hard on the case. I don't think there's any need to disclose the details of the investigation; but as of now we haven't got any solid lead," Ishwar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), South District, also in-charge of the SIT, told IANS.

The JNUSU had organised a sit-in outside the Administrative Block on Diwali to denounce the insincerity of the varsity officials and police in search for Najeeb Ahmed.

Close to 300 students took part in the sit-in, 'Light A Ray Of Hope For Najeeb', to express their solidarity with Ahmed and his grieving family on Sunday night.
