Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi today met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and briefed him about the investigation into the sedition case registered in connection with an event at the JNU campus against hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
JNU students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested yesterday in connection with the case, which sparked massive outrage among students and drew criticism from several political parties which dubbed it as an "emergency-like" situation.
The Commissioner went to Rajnath Singh's residence around 11.45 am to brief the latter about the JNU matter, official sources said.
Later in the day, the top cop tweeted, "As regards DP (Delhi Police), kindly have no doubts. DP is committed to the RULE OF LAW. We act without any extraneous influence."
"Allegations of Police personnel entering girls' hostels of JNU are totally incorrect, malicious and mischievous," he said in another tweet.
Leaders of Left parties and JD(U) also met Rajnath Singh today, demanding the release of Kanhaiya Kumar.
"We met the Home Minister and apprised him about the tense atmosphere in JNU at present. Delhi Police has released a list of 20 students in connection with the event, which also includes D Raja's daughter, but we are asking are they seen in the video shouting slogans?," CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury told reporters after the meeting.
Yesterday, the Home Minister had warned of "strongest possible" action against those involved in raising anti-India slogans at the event in JNU campus, saying such activities will not be tolerated.
"If anyone raises anti-India slogans, tries to raise questions on country's unity and integrity, they will not be spared. Stringent action will be taken against them," he had said.
