A case of rape has been registered against a JNU PhD scholar for allegedly raping a 26-year-old woman on the pretext of marriage, police said today.
A senior police officer requesting anonymity told Indo-Asian News Service the woman had approached the police on Tuesday evening complaining that the accused, Ajay Singh, a resident of Madhya Pradesh, had allegedly raped her on the pretext of marriage.
The accused was known to the victim since 2008, police said.
"The girl had come to Delhi in 2010 and since then they were in relationship. Singh despite repeated requests from the victim was not marrying her, hence she approached police," the officer added.
A case has been registered at south Delhi's Vasant Kunj police station under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code, police said.
Sources said that Ajay Singh is being questioned by police and he might be arrested after the statement of the woman is recorded under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
Last month, a PhD scholar of Jawaharlal Nehru University was booked on rape charges.
