Aakash Kumar, 23, who poisoned himself after injuring classmate (Roshni in inset)
New Delhi:
22-year-old Roshni Gupta was operated upon this morning at Delhi's Safdurjang hospital. It was the second surgery performed on the JNU student, who was attacked by a classmate with a cleaver just outside their classroom at the prestigious university yesterday.
The student from Bihar is still in the intensive care unit, though doctors say her condition is now stable. They say there is movement in her eyes and hands.
Akash, the young man, also from Bihar, who hit Roshni on the head after an altercation yesterday and then repeatedly stabbed her, consumed rat poison and died soon after. They have found a four-page letter in his diary in which he wrote that they were close friends but Roshni had started "ignoring" him of late.
"We became friends on the day we took admission....There was a lot between us and we were close. However, ego issues had cropped up between us...She began to look down upon me...She has been upset with me for some time and has been ignoring me," the letter reads.
Roshni's brother Sudhir, down from Bangalore where he works, says Akash had proposed marriage several times to his sister, but she had turned him down. Sudhir said Roshni had discussed this with her family but had not complained of any harassment by Akash.
Her parents are on their way to Delhi from her hometown, Darbhanga in Bihar. Sudhir describes Roshni, the youngest of four siblings, as a class topper and an introvert. Her professors said she had stood third in class, but seemed disturbed of late.
Classmates watched in horror yesterday as Akash, 23, stabbed Roshni five times and then brandished a country-made gun, threatening to shoot if anyone tried to help the grievously injured young woman. Some witnesses claimed that he even pulled the trigger but the gun did not shoot.
Akash then ate poison and also slit his own throat with the cleaver. All within two minutes. He had died before he could be taken to Delhi's AIIMS hospital, where an autopsy was performed on his body today.
The two students were classmates in a third year Korean course at JNU or Jawaharal Nehru University's School of Languages. They both lived in hostels on the sprawling university campus.
