Indraprastha University clarified that the fees has been increased by 32 per cent and not 75 per cent.
New Delhi:
Facing flak for an "exorbitant" fee hike, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University on Wednesday clarified that the fees has been increased by 32 per cent and not 75 per cent as announced earlier.
GGSIPU, a Delhi-government run university had last week announced that it has increased its annual fees from Rs 40,000 to 70,000, which attracted criticism from various quarters including parents and Opposition parties in Delhi. The percentage increase was 75 per cent.
The varsity on Wednesday clarified that the fees has been increased from Rs 53,000 to Rs 70,000 which is an increase of 32 per cent only.
"The revised fee structure shall not be applicable to the old students admitted prior to academic session 2016-17 and will be for freshly admitted students only," the varsity said in a statement.
"Last revision of the fee structure for the students was done in the academic session 2011-12. Even after current fee revision, it is still much lower than other state government's technical universities," the statement added.
IP University officials said the board of management (BOM) had in June approved the decision of revising the fees.
The admission fees charged by self-financing institutes has also been hiked in keeping with the recommendations made by the State Fee Regulatory Committee set up by the Delhi government in February 2013 to determine fees in private institutions in Delhi.
