New Delhi: A massive 30,000-kg of onions was sold on a single day today at Delhi government's Fair Price Shops (FPSs) across the national capital following its decision to reduce their rate from Rs 40 to Rs 30 per kilogram.
Delhi Food and Civil Supplies Minister Asif Ahmed Khan said that the slashing of prices had led to a huge spurt in the sale of onions at 280 FPSs and mobile vans.
The AAP government also said it will continue to keep a close watch on the prices and availability of onions in the market and interventions will be initiated as and when required.
Mr Khan said that, in light of directions by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the department will keep working round-the-clock to make good quality onions available to the common man at a reasonable price.
He further claimed that Delhi government's recent interventions have kept onion prices in check and markets have seen a downward movement of retail prices in the last one week.
The minister added that sufficient quantities of onion will be released for sale through FPS and mobile van outlets.
Meanwhile, Delhi government further said in a statement that "keeping pace with the general market sentiment on onion prices, largest retail chain Safal has also reduced retail onion prices from Rs 39 per kg to Rs 38 per kg."
