Lawyer's Body Found Near Delhi's Tis Hazari Court Complex; Murder Suspected

A lawyer was found dead this morning near the Tis Hazari court complex in Delhi

New Delhi: A lawyer was found dead in a pool of blood early this morning near the Tis Hazari court in Delhi.

The body of Rajeev Sharma, a resident of Rohini in northwest Delhi, was found near a dhaba, or roadside eatery, behind the court complex in north Delhi.

The police believe that the 38-year-old lawyer was murdered. They have arrested one person and detained three others for questioning.

The police said they suspect the lawyer was murdered last night, following a scuffle at the dhaba. He had a wound on his head that looks it was inflicted with a sharp weapon, police added. The lawyer still had on his court wear. His body was found on a street where there are several lawyers' chambers.

"Sharma's hands and legs were folded and his forehead was hit by a sharp-edged weapon...we found blood stains on the stairs. It was clear that the advocate was killed inside the eatery in the night and his body was thrown on the road early Friday morning," a police official said.

Sources told the Indo Asian News Service that Dhanna Ram Choudhury, 49, a resident of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, has been arrested, and three employees of the dhaba, that is owned by Manoj Singh, a lawyer, have been detained.

During interrogation, the arrested man told police that Sharma had a heated argument with him when he came to the dhaba after having a few alcoholic drinks. This then led to a scuffle between the two. Some other dhaba employees may have also joined in the fight and one of them might have hit Sharma with a sharp object, said sources.

District Court lawyers called a strike today to protest against the suspected murder. "A young advocate's body has been found in the court complex and he has been murdered. This is a serious issue. We are yet to know what he was doing here late (at) night,'' Sanjeev Nasiar, President of the Tis Hazari Bar Association, told the Press Trust of India.
