Lawyers of Patiala House courts to observe strike tomorrow

Lawyers of Patiala House district courts, where trial of important cases like 2G and CWG scams are going on, will observe a day-long strike tomorrow against Delhi government's "arbitrary" decision to re-locate the court complex.

The New Delhi Bar Association (NDBA) today said that in a meeting of the executive committee held yesterday, the members had "expressed their anguish over the unilateral cabinet decision" to re-locate the court complex from Patiala House to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg in Delhi.

The lawyers' body said the executive committee had met Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal on September 20 and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on September 21 and submitted written representations pointing out the flaws and insufficient infrastructure in carrying out the cabinet decision.

"To further register our protest against arbitrary, mechanical and unilateral cabinet decision of the government, it has been decided to request the members to abstain from work on September 25 at all courts of Patiala House complex," the NDBA said in a press statement.

The Delhi government had recently approved a long-pending proposal to shift the Patiala House district courts to a new complex at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg in central Delhi which will cost Rs 306 crore.
