Mamata Banerjee's victory leaves JNU divided

Mamata Banerjee's victory leaves JNU divided
New Delhi: The victory of Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress in West Bengal assembly polls has divided the Left dominated student bodies at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the Capital. While the Students Federation of India (SFI) believes that the Left parties will bounce back to power soon, the All India Students Association (AISA) and Democratic Students Union (DSU) feel that Left rule had to end in Bengal but Mamata should not have become the chief minister.

"We are working on our strategy for the days ahead. The Left will be there to take up issues. The petrol prices have been hiked; we will come up with our stand against such anti-people, anti-student policies of the Central government," said PK Anand, General Secretary of SFI at JNU. "I agree these are difficult times, but it's certainly not the end of the Left. It was just that people voted for a change and Mamata was benefited by the people's mandate," he added.

Vismay Bose, vice-president of AISA at JNU felt that the change was needed and that CPM had not been able to maintain Left Front's aspirations. "The CPM was not doing enough even in its last days. Their policies, corruption, land scams were enough reasons for their defeat in their home ground. The people in Bengal deserved a change. We are not mourning Left's defeat. Only time will tell, how much change can Mamata bring in the coming days," he said.

Putting the defeat of the Left in the background, the student bodies are now focusing on their future strategies and activities. The visibly upset SFI and DSU members are working on the plans to keep their base intact. The AISA members are giving priority to their newly-launched youth against corruption movement.

"We are planning strategies for our movement against corruption. The Mamata debate will go on. But we are to kick-start the anti-corruption movement countrywide," said Sucheta De, secretary, AISA.
