Man Accused in Gangrape Shoots Self to Implicate Victim's Brother

New Delhi: A 22-year-old man, accused in a gang-rape case, allegedly got himself shot in order to implicate the brother of the victim on false charges in Mangolpuri area of outer Delhi.

Police have arrested Sanjay, who had allegedly gang-raped the minor sister of the person, whom he wanted to implicate, around two years ago.

"Santosh had threatened the family of the gang-rape victim to withdraw the case or face dire consequences," said a police official.

According to police, on Sunday night, Santosh approached the cops at Mangolpuri Police Station with a bullet injury in his arm and stated that the gang-rape victim's brother tried to kill him.

The gang-rape victim's brother was initially detained on the basis of Sanjay's statement but was released after probe and a case was filed against Sanjay under section 195 (giving or fabricating false evidence) of the Indian Penal Code at the same police station.

Sanjay and one more accomplice were out on bail, while two others are in jail in the gang-rape case.

"The victim's family claimed that Sanjay's family has done everything possible to make them withdraw the case.They also offered money to the victim's family and when they refused to accept, they were threatened with dire consequences," the official added.
