Some vehicles were burnt during a protest after Shahnawaz was beaten to death in Delhi.
New Delhi: In her home in Central Delhi, Noorjahan broke down as she said, "I fed him food minutes before they killed him...those cruel people killed my son."
Shahnawaz, 38, was headed home from a family wedding on Sunday night when his motorcycle grazed a car near Delhi's famous Turkman Gate. For 15 minutes, Shahnawaz was beaten with iron rods by five men who were in the car, according to his young sons who were with him.
The nearest police station is just a 100 metres from where Shahnawaz was attacked. His mother says his sons rushed there for help, but were ignored. The boys then ran to their grandmother; by the time relatives reached the site of the accident, Shahnawaz was lying in a pool of blood and was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital he was taken to.
"There were two constables there. But when we asked for help, they just walked away," said Fahaad, who is 14; local police officers disagreed, but said they would investigate the allegation.
One suspect was arrested today. Not good enough, said angry residents who held large protests and blocked several roads.
Shahnawaz owned an electrical shop. "Those responsible for my son's death are local goons and they should be immediately arrested," said his father, Salauddin.
The seething anger in the area has prompted the police to step up security.
