New Delhi:
A man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly kidnapping and selling a three-year-old child to a woman co-worker who could not conceive, police said.
The woman to whom he sold the child was also arrested after he confessed to the crime, they said.
Father of three toddlers, Mohammad Altaf (23), who works at a handicrafts shop at Sitaram Bazaar in central Delhi allegedly sold Zubaid Ali to a co-worker and friend Saema (26) for Rs 10,000, DCP-central Vivek Kishore said.
The arrests were made following a complaint by the child's mother who said her son did not return home after going out on July 12.
Acting on a tip-off that the suspected kidnapper was on his way to Hauz Qazi area, police arrested Altaf.
Police claimed during interrogation, Altaf confessed to the crime and said he sold the child to Saema for Rs 10,000.
"Subsequently, Saema's house was raided and the child was recovered, who was later handed over to his parents," the official said.
Altaf disclosed that the duo planned the act after a casual conversation during which Saema told him that she was married in 2006 but unable to conceive.
Later Saema told police that she had strained relations with her husband, who wanted a male child. She said Altaf, out of greed, agreed to arrange her a child.
"On July 12, Altaf reached Zubaid's residence where he lured the child on the pretext of giving him toffees. While Altaf had been paid Rs 5,000 as a first instalment by Saema, the rest was to be paid within three days," the official said, adding that Altaf is married and has three children.
