Man arrested with over 1,000 cartridges at New Delhi station

New Delhi: A man heading to Guwahati allegedly carrying over 1,000 cartridges without documents was arrested from the New Delhi railway station today after police found his movement suspicious.

The man said to be a manager with Mizoram Rifles Club was apprehended this morning while he was entering platform to board Guwahti-bound North-East Express, senior police and railway officials said.

Police recovered 1,025 bullets of .22 bore from him, a senior police official said, adding no arms were recovered.

"The man was entering the platform but refused to keep the bag he was carrying in the X-Ray scanner for checking despite security personnel's insistence. He kept on refusing to hand over the bag to the personnel," the official said.

This raised suspicion, he said, adding the security personnel at the railway station then apprehended him and checked the bag from which the cartridges were recovered.

When questioned, the official claimed, the man could not provide any documents allowing him to carry the cartridges.

The man was immediately placed under arrest and a case of Arms Act was slapped against him.

He was handed over to Delhi Police's elite anti-terror wing Special Cell.

"The investigators are further questioning the man. We are taking extra precaution as it was Republic Day. The background checking is also being done," the official said.
